Buy.at 5-a-side Tournament   no comments

Posted at 9:52 am in blog

Last Friday saw the Buy.at 5-a-side football tournament. Held at the incredible David Beckham Academy, it was a well organised and fun day for all involved. Personally, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Neil McDermott from Venturian Media for letting me join their team. Thanks also to Buy.at for hosting a superb event. We didn’t win, but did at least beat one of the Buy.at host teams.
After the football, a group of us headed to the O2 for evening refreshment. While the lure of going in to see Cliff Richard was tempting, I think we all managed to resist joining the blue-rinse brigade.

Here’s a few shots from the day. Sorry I couldn’t get more but I was either busy playing, or desperately trying to catch breath for the next game.

Ad:Tech   no comments

Posted at 9:27 am in blog

Although not on the 2 levels at Olympia like 2 years ago, Ad:Tech this year was busy, busy, busy. We arrived mid-morning, and already the hall was packed out.

We met up with clients old and new, and most gave a very definite indication that business has been improving dramatically over the past few months. Online marketing jobs are getting more focus and headcount approval is happening again.

Client servicing roles seem to be increasing greatest, with companies making sure that as well as winning new business, they hold on to existing customers too. There’s still a big focus on the more technical side too – from development to hands-on campaign management.

A good day, despite the poor coffee.

Magic Shoes   no comments

For a bit of fun, my daughter and I made a video last weekend. She wanted to do a magic trick and we came up with this.
It was great fun to make and we welcome all suggestion on how we did it!

London Triathalon   no comments

Posted at 10:35 am in blog

A couple of weeks ago my brother completed the Mazda London Triathalon. Spurred on by inspiration and a large dose of guilt, I am now officially in training for next year.

I’ll be attempting the Sprint version – 750m swim, 20K cycle and 5K run. The swim won’t be a problem as I swam competitively as a teen, the cycle I can probably handle, but running has never been my forte. So, I’m in the gym training hard (well, quite hard) to get my fitness levels back to what they were 20 years ago. Actually, perhaps not 20 years ago, but 10 years ago might be achievable.

I’ll keep you posted on how it’s going, and any suggestions for worthy children’s charities to get sponsorship for, are welcome.

Affiliates4U Networking Event   no comments

Posted at 2:52 pm in blog

Again, the Affiliate Marketing community came together last night to meet new friends and old (and have a beer or two), and everyone seemed to have an excellent time.
We met up with many of our clients (and candidates we’ve introduced to them). There seemed to be a feeling that the industry is in an good position overall, with more merchants / advertisers seeing the benefit of affiliate marketing all the time. There’s also some excellent tools for Affiliates on the market now, such as skimlinks, easycontentunits and of course WordPress (this site is built on it!). All these go a long way to make it easier for publishers to innovate in other ways.

If you have affiliate marketing jobs which require attention, or you’re looking for a new job in affiliate marketing please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Here’s a brief video shot from the bar last night. Who is that waving?

Microsoft & Yahoo Search – Is it all back on?   no comments

Posted at 4:45 pm in blog

Microsoft and Yahoo, its all back on again. This is like one of those celebrity relationships that hits the press from time to time.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/jul/17/microsoft-yahoo

Will they make it to the alter and finally get hitched, what will the prenuptial agreement say and who will be laughing the longest and loudest?

All will be revealed

A4U Expo   no comments

a4uexpo
A4U Expo time is coming round again !

Anyone who is relevant in Affiliate Marketing is likely to be there, and as I pointed out in my post yesterday – Affiliate Marketing is set to have another good year. Affiliate Marketing jobs slowed a little at the beginning of this year, but we’ve seen a steady increase over the past few months.

The Expo is the best opportunity for Networks, Merchants, Agencies and Publishers to meet and network in the UK.
They seem to have changed the format very slightly as the price paid, now includes the conferences unlike last year where this was a paid extra. This is a good move I think as from what I saw, most people were wandering into the conferences unchecked anyway. I’m not sure if the speakers have been announced yet, but the information that can be gathered at the Expo will certainly be extensive.

Don’t forget the parties too ! See you there !

Affiliate Networking Event   no comments

imbibe-bar
I’m looking forward to attending the Affiliate Networking Event on 29th July at the Imbibe Bar. Although organised via Affiliates4U, judging by the last one I was at, it will be a fairly informal affair, but with plenty of great opportunities for meeting up with old friends and new.

Most of the main networks are sponsoring the event including :
Affiliate Future
Affiliate Window
Affilinet
Commission Junction
dgm
Linkshare
OMG
Platorm A’s Buy.at
Silvertap
Tradedoubler
Webgains
Zanox

This is what I find interesting about the Affiliate Marketing industry. All these companies are (near enough) direct competitors, and while there is of course competition for new merchants and affiliates, the atmosphere is friendly and almost collaborative.
How does it work that way ? I’m not entirely sure, but I think that the industry’s old reputation as the ‘poor relation’ to other more traditional digital marketing channels could actually be helping. As we all try to combat the old ‘grubby’ mantle together, a feeling emerges that all involved are working toward a common goal.

And why not ? The IAB recently predicted that the Affiliate Marketing sector will generate over £4 billion in sales this year.
Notice the £ (pound sterling) sign ? That’s the UK market ! All the signs are that the UK is leading the way in Affiliate Marketing, with more companies entering the UK and shifting their focus onto the UK market.

Good news for merchants who now seem to understand the benefit of the CPA model. Good news for the Affiliate Networks. Good news for Publishers. I work as an Affiliate Publisher too, and I have to say it’s an exciting time to be involved in this excellent industry.
