Affiliates4U get together at Ogilvy   no comments

The A4U get together was hosted at the fantastic Ogilvy offices at 10 Cabot Square last night. It’s always good to meet up with old friends, and make some new acquaintances. It was certainly interesting to see how many people we had helped with moves in the industry, both as candidates and clients.
The general mood was definitely a positive one, with most people reporting a much improved beginning to the year, over what was overall a fairly tough 2009. However, it seems the industry weathered the storm of the last 12 months better than most.
I’ve been very poor at updating the blog over the past couple of months and this post is equally short unfortunately. It’s a good sign though – it means that we’re busy recruiting!

First sale relief   no comments

As you may know, I also publish a number of Affiliate Marketing websites too. The original intention was to ensure that I maintained up-to-date knowledge of the industry, as it requires a reasonable understanding of PPC and SEO too (and affiliate Marketing of course). This enables us to work closer with our clients on the online marketing jobs which we specialise in.
While I can build sites by hand in HTML I’ve found, like many others that the WordPress platform offers an excellent and highly customisable platform to work with.

Anyway, I’m in the process of populating my latest site with products, and it made it’s first sale yesterday (via Amazon). It’s always a huge sigh of relief when it works – knowing that you haven’t been wasting your time for the past week!
It’s always interesting with Amazon too – seeing how many other associates sales you make alongside the original purchase. It really does convert very well, and those added bonuses make it really worthwhile.

Affiliate Networking Event   no comments

I’m looking forward to attending the Affiliate Networking Event on 29th July at the Imbibe Bar. Although organised via Affiliates4U, judging by the last one I was at, it will be a fairly informal affair, but with plenty of great opportunities for meeting up with old friends and new.

Most of the main networks are sponsoring the event including :

Affiliate Window
Commission Junction
Platorm A’s

This is what I find interesting about the Affiliate Marketing industry. All these companies are (near enough) direct competitors, and while there is of course competition for new merchants and affiliates, the atmosphere is friendly and almost collaborative.
How does it work that way ? I’m not entirely sure, but I think that the industry’s old reputation as the ‘poor relation’ to other more traditional digital marketing channels could actually be helping. As we all try to combat the old ‘grubby’ mantle together, a feeling emerges that all involved are working toward a common goal.

And why not ? The IAB recently predicted that the Affiliate Marketing sector will generate over £4 billion in sales this year.
Notice the £ (pound sterling) sign ? That’s the UK market ! All the signs are that the UK is leading the way in Affiliate Marketing, with more companies entering the UK and shifting their focus onto the UK market.

Good news for merchants who now seem to understand the benefit of the CPA model. Good news for the Affiliate Networks. Good news for Publishers. I work as an Affiliate Publisher too, and I have to say it’s an exciting time to be involved in this excellent industry.

Google test new ad model   no comments

googleaffiliatenetworkIt seems Google are testing (on a relatively small scale) a new ad model
Wall St Journal article.
Google Product Ads looks like it’s going to appear on a low number of results during beta, and will feature both image and price information. The interesting part is that rather than CPC (cost per click), it will be an advertiser defined CPA (cost per acquisition), where advertisers set the commission rate paid on successful conversions.

One can only assume that this is a direct response to Microsoft’s new search engine Bing, which is actively pursuing online shoppers, with a similar model already. There’s no keywording option on the Google’s new ads, they will categorise them based on the feed supplied to Google Base – will this put some advertisers off ? Who knows ?
It’s all part of Google Affiliate Network, which was created when Google bought Doubleclick for $3.1 billion (which included Performics) – a deal which was finalised in March 2008.
